Dorade at the 164th NYYC Annual Regatta

Dorade raced in the 164th Annual Regatta this past weekend out of New York Yacht Club in Newport. The team took the class win for Friday’s Around the Island Race and fifth in class in Saturday and Sunday’s racing (both in ORR-Navigator Class).

From Tactician Kevin Miller:

“Friday we had good conditions. We went clockwise around the island and had 8-14 knots of wind for the first three quarters of the race. We were easily winning at that point, but then we made a jib choice and went to a smaller sail because the breeze was forecasted to build. However, the forecast was not quite right and the breeze actually dropped. We started losing from there, but then managed to pull ahead and take the win in our class by a few seconds. It was a bit of a nail biter in the end, but we’re happy it went our way.

“The next two days were not ideal Dorade conditions. On Saturday we had a start off Rose Island, in 4-7 knots of wind. They sent us out to one of the bell buoys offshore, went around that and then all the way to Prudence Island and back to the finish. That race was long and super light.

“On Sunday, the wind was even lighter. Peak wind was at five knots, so we started racing a little late. We drifted across the start line. That race went pretty well considering the type of boat we’re racing in and in the end we ended up fifth place in our class.”
