1500UTC 31N 6538W

Comments: 33 38N 67 48W AT 1421UTC.TWD 060 AT 12KTS. 000COG 7.5SOG. STILL SAILING WELL. BUT APROACHING HIGH SOON. DORADE

Remarks: 000 COG means his Course Over Ground is due North. 7.5 SOG means his Speed Over Ground is 7.5 Kts

Dorade is making good progress. When Dorade reaches to the center of the high pressure area, she will probably motor for a while in the light airs before some southerly wind kicks-in and takes her north, nice and fast.

Dorade has been advised to head for an eastern part of a meander in the Gulf Stream – this will mean she should avoid the worst of the southerly winds (which will be very fresh to the west) and also get some northward flowing current to help her get more SOG. Dorade should get to the Stream in about 28 hours time.

Weather Routing Update for Bermuda Departure
From Jessica Sweeney

Earliest departure looks to be Saturday night (00z on 13th), after the major cold front (with associated gales of 30kts+) has passed through.
[eg. If you left right now and tried to get the least time with the front you would still have 18 hrs of 30-35kt southerlies and then 30 hours of 20-25kt northerlies in a bad sea state. Not nice!]

So we’ll aim for a Saturday/Sunday departure. The thing we’ll have to keep an eye on is a little low developing west of Bermuda on the 14-16th and moving north. You will need to make sure you can get ahead of this by departing at the right time.

I will keep looking at it for you, of course.

May 6

Dorade arrived in Bermuda at 0100UTM this morning. Presenting docked at Customs Dock.

Dorade plans to lay-over in Bermuda for a few days to allow the storm to pass before proceeding to Newport, RI

All is well with the crew and Dorade.

Bermuda – THANKS BUDDY!

We have been doing some maintenance. Buddy Rego has been very helpful in sorting out crew accommodations on-shore and contacts for boat work while Dorade waits out the weather before proceeding to Newport, RI

As far back as I can remember I wanted to design fast boats,” writes Olin Stephens in the opening words of his autobiography, All This and Sailing Too, which we heartily recommend. Today you can read another take on Olin and his brother Rod in our latest blog post, at the link in our bio—a look back at the two-part feature story on the Stephen Brothers written by Morton M. Hunt for The New Yorker's September 1957 issue. In this excerpt, we pick up the story with the publication of Olin’s first design in Yachting magazine and the beginning of the partnership that became the pre-eminent yacht design firm of the mid-20th century, Sparkman & Stephens. A yacht named Dorade was soon to follow…
