We have a small problem – it is proving to be exceptionally difficult to find a Raymarine radar antenna for the C120 chart plotter that is in Dorade. The question is whether to update the entire chart plotter system or not.
Pros for keeping the C120
It works
It’s already installed
If we could find a radar antenna, it would be relatively easy to install to be up and running
Cons for keeping the C120
There is not much space in the panel
An extra external GPS antenna is necessary to integrate AIS
Difficulty finding the radar antenna
Will not display XM weather satellite
Redrawing maps is slow
Power draw is higher than an newer, smaller unit
NMEA 0813 only (won’t necessarily connect to newer equipment)
Ok, so if the decision were made to upgrade, what would replace it? The decision must take into account that 90% of navigation will actually happen on a laptop – and the laptop will have a mobile screen for the cockpit. This will work with the current system as well as a new one. A smaller screen would also free up room for the sat phone and other electronics.
The idea would be to replace the Raymarine unit with a small Furuno chart plotter. It would have all of the bells and whistles, such as XM weather overlay, etc.

While we are working on putting a quote together for a new navigation system, comments are welcome. There is no time like the present!
