First Again at the Herreshoff Classic

The Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta brings an extraordinary collection of classic yachts to the Bristol, R.I., waterfront where the Herreshoff Marine Museum is situated. This year, the feeder race from Newport didn’t have enough wind to get started, so Dorade arrived under power. But the next day brought a northeasterly with velocities at 15 knots and more.

Dorade arrived in Bristol, R.I. with no wind, then sailed in a strong and gusty northeasterly the next day.

Team Dorade engaged in a great duel with Craig Venter’s 53-foot S&S sloop, Sonny, including a memorable gusty downwind leg. Dorade crossed the finish line 33 seconds ahead and the pair finished one-two overall in the Classic Racing Fleet.

The victory brought Dorade close to Sonny for the lead in the Classic Yacht Owners Association summer series and ensured the Challenge Series result would be decided in Newport, the following week.
