The last day provided some of the best most consistent breeze of the race and we managed to keep up good speeds throughout the day. We had a good tussle with a couple of the faster boats during the day which eventually passed us but considering Dorade’s vintage I am sure the other boats were surprised we held them off for so long.
Two good sized tunas were pulled on board and an excellent sashimi platter was served for lunch and dinner. Definitely a good morale booster but spirits we pretty high on board anyway.
As the sun set we could see Cabo in the distance and start to smell the tequila waiting for us. The last mile or two to the Finnish the wind closed down and we ended up doing more sail changes in the last hour than in most of the race. At one point the wind was doing circles around us and the boat speed was zero. I could have easily swam across the Finnish faster which was a little torture after six and a half days of racing.
Anyway we finally crossed the line and took first place in PHRF division which was a great victory for the crew and the first time dorade had taken a win in an offshore race in many decades.
Commodore Avery was on the dock to catch our lines with the customary tequila, unfortunately they had done the prize giving earlier in the evening before we finished. A fantastic race was had by all and I definitely want to come back on the Cabo race next time.
