Things are pretty calm out here still although we have been making good speed under sail up until just now. The engine is back on but I think in the next six hours or so we should have the new breeze from the other side. From then on its straight in to Newport. Lars is […]

We have less than 3 knots of wind and have been motoring for almost 24hrs towards New Port. Sails are down and not much going on although we did have a quick swim this morning whilst letting the engine cool to do some checks. Servicing a couple of winches this afternoon and enjoying the calm […]

The wind is now down to 10kts and it is probably going to drop out fairly soon. We have not used the engine yet for anything other than charging so we have lots of fuel. Bermuda is 200 miles to the North East but the weather looks great for New Port so there is definitely […]

This morning the wind has eased a little and veered more easterly again giving us the opportunity to dry things out and do a little house keeping. Boat speeds are still in the sevens without making any changes and the sea state is allowing some catch up on sleep and a chance to cook some […]

Wind is consistently more than 5 knots than GRIBS show. We have not seen less than 20kts all night and the average is probably a little higher. Breeze has been a little stronger and a bit more north since last night. We dropped the MH1 last night and have been sailing under staysail, 2 reefs and mizzen. Speeds have been great and the boat not rocked up to much. Maximum gust has been 29kts so this has been the perfect sail plan. […]

Just about 24hrs at sea now and we have made good progress. Mostly beam reach reaching with full sail and averaging 8 knots most of the time. There have been a lot of squalls bringing a lot of rain but not to much wind. I think the next 24hrs will be the same. Position N […]

There was no hanging around after the BVI Regatta. We sailed Dorade straight back to Antigua to make sure we had the time to get her looking beautiful ready for the arrival of a new team and the start of Antigua Classic Week. It is not often that race prep involves varnishing and adding weight […]

Original article published on Yachting Magazine September 1933 Issue - PDF scan found here. Well, here we are in the North Sea, since yesterday noon (June 12th), when finding favorable tide conditions we shot through Pentland Firth, by Scapa Flow, into this rather chilly, cheerless and choppy sea. We have had, on the whole, a […]
