Full-rigged models of Carina and Dorade will be added to the Club’s unrivaled model collection this spring. Club Nights at 44th Street (March 26) and Harbour Court (March 21) will enable members to celebrate two of the most accomplished racing yachts in offshore sailing.
The models are being donated to the Club by members Jonathan Nye and Matt Brooks. Model builders Jerry Melton and Rob Napier will be present at both Club Nights to describe the methods they used and the challenges they had in constructing these masterpieces, which will be on display at both events.
These boats play an important part in Club sailing history; both have won transatlantic races (Dorade in 1931, Carina in 1972). They continue to compete in and win races today: Dorade (at right) won overall honors in the 2013 Transpac, while Carina (above) won the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy in the Newport Bermuda Race in 2010 and 2012). Both boats will take part in the Transatlantic Race 2015, starting from Harbour Court this summer. Current and former skippers and crew will be present as these models join the Club’s collection.
