The conditions could not have been better for our first day of practice here in Cowes, preparing for the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary International Regatta. After a drenching rain and high winds the previous night, we awoke to brilliant blue skies, flat water, and 10-15 knots of breeze. We are worried that the St. Francis […]

Dorade made her first mark in the sailing world 84 years ago when Rod and Olin sailed her to victory in the 1931 Transatlantic Race, and last week the 52-foot yawl returned to Cowes, England after finishing the very same event and beating her original time by over 26 hours, despite racing more than 300 […]

Dorade is getting ready for the Royal Yacht Squadron 200th Bicentenary International Regatta, which kicks off next week, followed by the Rolex Fastnet Race in August. The boat was hauled in Cowes this week and sustained little to no damage after racing 3,220 nautical miles in the Transatlantic Race. Stay tuned for more updates on […]

From the race organizers: One of the greatest stories of this Transatlantic Race 2015 is the participation of Dorade, the 53’ yacht that a young Olin Stephens, of S&S design house fame, campaigned in this same race 84 years ago. Today the restored boat is being raced by Matt Brooks who won the 2013 Transpac […]

Dorade may have finished the Transatlantic Race yesterday, but their full journey didn’t come to an end until today at 15:40 UTC (11:40 EST) when the team completed the event’s separately-scored coastal race, which continued from the finish at The Lizard and took them an additional 169 nautical miles to the Royal Yacht Squadron finish line […]

Today (July 13, 2015) at 13:00 EDT, Matt Brook’s 52-foot yawl Dorade finished the 2015 Transatlantic Race, beating Rod and Olin's 1931 record by more than a day, despite having gone almost 200 miles further due to this year’s exclusion zone. The team’s preliminary standings (pending the rest of the finishes) are second place in the […]

Race Update: July 12, 2015 Terry Halpin Good evening sports fans – I'm normally a pretty quiet and reserved guy, but the boys have asked me to contribute to the Dorade blog, so I'm going to give it a shot. I'll start with the facts: We are approximately 180 nautical miles from the finish at […]

The last of these weather systems are over us now and have been for the past eight hours or so. The guys have all put in a huge effort to try and push Dorade as hard as possible, with the hopes of minimizing the mileage loss against the other boats in front and behind us. […]

It’s not often you get to do something this special. The past few days have provided us with some challenging sailing, interesting debates and great laughs. The winds have finally calmed down enough for us to open up the hatches, hoist all the sails and start the “downwind roll” (those that have sailed Dorade will […]

We have approximately 1,000 miles to the finish and the A4 sail is up on Starboard tack. After four days of grey skies and breeze up above 25 knots, we’re finally seeing a little change of weather with the skies slightly clearing. However, the water is still choppy and cold with the temperature around 65 […]
