Dorade Team

Matt and Pam were in Newport over the weekend to see our progress and get an idea of what is left to be done. Spent some time looking at the original interior plans and are pleased to report that our work is quite in keeping with the 1930 DORADE layout. The close up of the […]

The interior is being fitted with a new cabin sole. During her refit in Italy, DORADE'S sole was built out of a tropical hardwood. This type of wood not only seemed untraditional but is quite heavy. So with our eyes on weight savings and authenticity, we have Sam constructing a new cabin sole out of […]

A few shots of the guys hard at work prepping for and applying yacht finish.  It is quite a thing to balance the work loads of painters, varnishers and carpenters.  Joe is making room for everyone with his eye for quality and efficency.

Jim buttoning up the wood keel to garboard seam with cotton caulking. Chet said watching Jim at this type of work is "like watching Stradivarius build a cello"!  The seam will be primed then filled with 2 part rubber adhesive caulk.

Met with Peter this morning to get familiar with the inside of the spar before the final glue ups close it in for good.  This business of balancing wire runs and halyards seems to be working out very well.  We have managed at the 11th hour to sneak some tails inside the spar for their […]

Bro has completed a teak platform for the under cockpit storage area.  The platform serves to divide the space into two levels of storage.  Items that get less frequent use can be nested into the frames and floors below the platform.  Upstairs allows room for keeping things that need to be close at hand.  The […]

Jens has built some lovely wedges to support the mizzen mast at the deck partners.  Two laminated blocks are carved to fit the deck cut out on their outer profile and the shape of the spar on their inner.  Jens chose to craft these in teak.  You can see the old spar butt laying on […]

A rough outline of DORADE'S interior has been installed upstairs.  The idea being to facilitate stowage planning, and interior re construction.  The bits going back on board can be laid out where they belong.  We can make sure all the pieces of the puzzle are accounted for without interrupting work  inside the boat.  This little […]

Bro has been working hard on Matt's bunk. Aft of the nav station, tucked along the starboard side of the cockpit will be the owners quarter berth. Matt has made it clear that he can fit comfortably behind the hanging knee, which supports the aft end of the cabin house. Amenities will include a privacy […]

We have been working with Phip at Rig Pro on testing various materials and thicknesses for the new mast hardware. Sample tangs are pulled to 8000 pounds stopping every 2000 pounds to measure hole elongation. All recorded data has been forwarded to Greg for evaluation. Preliminary results look to using phosphur bronze as the material […]

The keel joint had been packed with epoxy and was cracked it's whole length. Epoxy has been reefed out and the lead to wood joint has been properly addressed to prevent leaking and biological intrusion. Chet built a router jig to accurately recut the seam between the lead and the oak keelson. The jig had […]

A full mock up of the galley and nav area has been completed in order to get a feel for the layout of and flow between the port and starboard components of the aft cabin. The joiner work will be completed off site and installed fully varnished.  Joe is keeping a keen eye on weight savings. Additional […]

The lower part of the forward starboard lockers has been fitted to accommodate Dorade'sbatteries. Twin lithium ion batteries will sit on top of the platform. Ample tie down and covering will be fitted once the batteries themselves arrive. After much deliberation, Joe has found a location that is both low enough and forward enough for these […]

Rope on the left is double braid poly by New England Ropes and is a sample of what Doradecurrently sails with. Rope on the right is poly spec from Nova Braid and is being considered for new halyards on the new spars.  A third option is available from Gleistein Ropes in Europe.  We are looking […]
